January 29th 2011, Orlando, U.S.A.: If the
first two days of the 58th PGA Merchandise Show are an accurate
barometer, the golf industry is putting recession in its rearview mirror
and riding a wave of positive momentum into the 2011 business cycle. Nearly 10 miles of aisles were bustling with business Friday on Day Two of the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show, with a galaxy of golf's brightest stars teaming with a series of education seminars, fashion and equipment presentations, industry announcements and roundtable discussions to set the table for today's final day of the golf industry's largest retailing reunion at the Orange County Convention Center. "Based on the buzz and excitement at this Show, it feels like the golf industry is moving forward and is primed for a turnaround year - economy be damned," noted Bob Maggiore, vice president, brand and product marketing for TaylorMade-adidas Golf. "We recognized that we had a unique opportunity this year to promote all three of our brands - TaylorMade, adidas and Ashworth - under one roof, and I think the presence of so many industry leaders has helped us all draft off each other's energy." With virtually every major equipment, apparel and accessory company exhibiting and writing orders, attendance at the 2011 Show was up 15 percent entering Saturday's final day of merchandising, networking and product presentations. One of the crowd magnets on Friday was the long list of celebrity appearances, including 2010 U.S. Women's Open champion Paula Creamer; LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez; LPGA standouts Anna Nordqvist and Natalie Gulbis, and PGA Tour bright lights Matt Kuchar and Ryan Moore. "All of the new products and technology at this year's Show indicate the needle is moving in a positive direction," said PGA Professional Ed LaPierre of PGA Tour Superstore in Naples, Fla. "The support of so many companies and the presence of so many celebrities has made this the best Show in many, many years." Added Michael Marion, PGA Master Professional and director of golf at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif.: "It's nice to see all of the equipment companies back at the Show, and it's great to see so many apparel companies using the Show to introduce fresh, new styles and colors. "People are re-evaluating budgets and products, but there is hope on the horizon. I think we're starting to see bright light at the end of the tunnel." Several presentations and roundtable discussions on the PGA Equipment Forum stage drew large audiences at the Show Friday, as did a late-afternoon Play Golf America Conference and the Elations "Rock the Joint" concert featuring Lou Gramm of Foreigner singing his 15 top-10 hits on Friday evening in the Linda W. Chapin Theater at the Orange County Convention Center. The 2010 PGA Merchandisers of the Year provided an educational array of best practices to attendees during a spirited presentation Friday morning, while an informative clubfitting and product presentation by Ping followed. A roundtable discussion and presentation on women's golf entitled "Putting Yourself in Her Shoes: Your Course Playbook for a Winning Season" drew another enthusiastic crowd in the afternoon. "These types of discussions that really get golf facilities thinking about women's issues and how to serve the women's golf market are very important, and the PGA Merchandise Show is the ideal place to conduct such a presentation," said PGA Professional Le Ann Finger, who moderated the panel discussion. "Women can make a difference, and are making a difference at golf facilities throughout the nation." Rolling into today's final chapter of the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show, most of the nearly 1,000 companies and brands exhibiting are encouraged about the economy and the 2011 business cycle. "Judging by the response to our new products, I would have to give the PGA Merchandise Show an 'A' grade this year. I would also say the industry is turning the corner as far as the economy and is back on positive ground," said Dennis Moses, Midwest sales manager for Callaway Golf. "A good, positive PGA Merchandise Show is good for the health of the industry, and that is what we have experienced this week." Farmers Insurance Open
January 29th 2011, San Diego, U.S.A.: Phil Mickelson found the
trick to playing the revamped South Course at Torrey Pines and left
himself one round away from winning on a course that once felt like
home.
Going
against his nature, Mickelson played it safe again Saturday and wound
up with a 4-under 68 to share the lead with Bill Haas going into the
final round of the Farmers Insurance Open. Haas missed a 4-foot putt par
putt on the last hole for a 71.
It has been 10 years since Mickelson won his third title at Torrey Pines, a public course he grew up playing in San Diego.
"I love playing well in this tournament, and I've missed it," Mickelson said.
Tiger Woods, who has not lost a tournament at Torrey Pines since 2004, shot himself out of the tournament with careless mistakes. Woods had a 2-over 74, ending his streak of 21 rounds at par or better on the South Course in PGA TOUR events. He was eight shots behind, his largest 54-hole deficit at Torrey since 2004.
Even with his longtime nemesis out of the way, Mickelson doesn't see an easy path to winning.
Haas is coming off a two-win season in 2010, and lost in a playoff a week ago at the Bob Hope Classic. He kept making enough birdies to keep in front of Mickelson, including a 25-foot putt on the 15th, the toughest on the course.
They were at 12-under 204.
Hunter Mahan and Bubba Watson each made eagle on the par-5 18th to shoot 69 and were one shot behind. Another shot back was Anthony Kim, showing signs of turning his game. Kim escaped with only a bogey on the 15th after an adventure through the eucalyptus trees, and birdied the 18th for a 71.
John Daly, who pulled within one shot of the lead early in the third round, fell apart with a string of bogeys and shot 76.
Mickelson has taken every opportunity to criticize the South Course since Rees Jones redesigned it ahead of the 2008 U.S. Open. Lefty has yet to finish higher than fourth since then.
This time, Mickelson decided not to go for broke.
"I'm not taking on the risk. I'm just playing it much more conservative because the reward isn't there," he said. "This course doesn't reward you for taking on any challenge. And my more conservative approach into the greens, albeit boring, has led me to be on top of the leaderboard."
Only eight players managed to break 70 on "college day" at the tournament, when players were encouraged to wear their college colors or their team logos. Mickelson, who didn't have any Arizona State garb on, matched D.A. Points for the low round.
Haas didn't make too many mistakes, and pulled ahead with two good birdies. With the tee back in U.S. Open territory on the 13th, making it play over 600 yards, Haas nearly got home with a 3-wood that set up and easy up-and-down birdie. All that kept him out of the lead was a wedge that bounced over the firm 18th green into the rough.
Woods started the third round only five shots behind, and that was as close as he got.
It what has become a troublesome theme for Woods this week, the wedge is what held him back. From just over 100 yards in the fairway, he dumped a wedge into a bunker and left himself no shot, blasting out to 20 feet for bogey. That was followed by a three-putt bogey, and a bunker-to-bunker bogey on the fifth hole.
He picked up birdies on the par 5s on the front nine, and played 1 over the rest of the way. When he was in the fairway with a short iron or a wedge, he never gave himself many looks at birdie.
"I did not play well at all today," Woods said. "It was a struggle all day, and I finally found something at 16, but 15 holes already had bone by. So that was pretty frustrating."
A new season might bring an end to yet another streak for Woods. He has never finished out of the top 10 in his 12 tournaments as a pro, and ended Saturday in a tie for 24th.
The star of his group was Jhonattan Vegas, the Venezuela rookie coming off a playoff win at the Hope. He made his first meeting with Woods seem like an ordinary round. With some good par saves and a two-putt birdie at the end, he wound up beating Woods by five shots and still has a chance to win the tournament.
Vegas was at 9-under 207, only three shot out of the lead.
"I felt comfortable playing with him," Vegas said. "And the crowd was crazy, but it was fun. I enjoyed it."
Few people are having more fun than Mickelson, who hopes to have discovered how to win at Torrey Pines, and is relishing in having his wife, Amy, mingling in the crowd at a golf tournament for the first time since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2009. She showed up at the 18th green at the Masters when Mickelson won last year, and spent much of her time in a golf cart at the soggy Ryder Cup in Wales.
Mickelson now faces a familiar name. He has spent far more time playing with Jay Haas than his 28-year-old son, although he has seen enough of Bill Haas to know Sunday will require a lot of patience and a few putts.

Shamim builds 2-stroke lead at Bangladesh Open RD2
January 27th 2011, Dhaka, Bangladesh: Shamim Khan of Delhi
shot a six under 66 at the Kurmitola Golf Club on Thursday to build a
two-stroke lead at the American Express Bangladesh Open 2011. Shamim’s
overall score reads eight under 136 at the halfway stage. Kolkata’s Raju
Ali Mollah and Bangladeshi amateur Md Zakiruzzaman share second place
at six under 138.
The cut was declared at eight over 152. Fifty professionals and three amateurs made the cut.
Shamim Khan (70-66) dropped his only bogey of the day on the opening
hole after missing a chip-putt from the edge. He then hit a purple patch
with five successive birdies from the third through the seventh. Shamim
sank a couple of 15-footers on the third and sixth and chipped-in from
about 35 feet on the fourth.
Shamim, a three-time winner on the Aircel PGTI, added two more birdies on the 11th and 14th.
Shamim said, “I’ve been in good hitting form over the last two days but my putting was much better today as compared to round one. I had a really good stretch on the front nine where I chipped and putted extremely well. An excellent lob wedge shot from 70 yards out on the seventh set up an important four feet birdie putt for me.
“I’ve played well on this course in the past and have the confidence going ahead into the money rounds. However, it’ll be imperative to putt well over the next two days.”
Raju Ali Mollah’s (69-69) second straight 69 of the tournament featured six birdies and three bogeys and placed him in tied second.
Bangladeshi amateur Md Zakiruzzaman (71-67) posted a 67 to share second place along with Raju Ali Mollah. Zakiruzzaman, a member of the Bangladeshi team that won the gold medal at the 2010 South Asian Games, made seven birdies against two bogeys in his second round.
Gaganjeet Bhullar and Bangladesh’s Md Siddikur Rahman, two of the pre-tournament favourites, were tied fourth at five under 139 after round two.
Bhullar, who fired a 71 on day two, not only sank an eagle and five birdies but also dropped two bogeys and a quadruple bogey on the par-four 11th. Siddikur’s second round 68 was punctuated by an eagle, three birdies and a bogey.
Feroz Ali Mollah of Kolkata, who ended the day in tied 32nd at four over 148, made a hole-in-one on the 173-yard eighth hole. His eight-iron tee shot landed five feet short of the hole and rolled in after a couple of bounces.

World #1 Westwood to headline Indonesian Masters
January 20th 2011, Jakarta, Indonesia: Indonesia will host its
newest professional golf tournament on the Asian Tour in April with the
inauguration of the US$750,000 Indonesian Masters at the prestigious
Royale Jakarta Golf Club, officials announced today.
World
number one Lee Westwood of England will headline the Indonesian Masters
alongside Asia’s top stars from April 21-24, 2011, with the first
champion taking home a winner’s cheque of US$118,875.
Sponsors of the elite and full-field Asian Tour event include Royale Jakarta and Four Seasons Hotel. The Professional Golf Association of Indonesia (PGPI) will also sanction the Indonesian Masters.
The Indonesian Masters is earmarked to become the country’s premier golf championship on the Asian Tour, with plans to raise its prize fund and attract other international stars to Indonesia in the coming years.
Organisers lauded the event’s launch and believe that Westwood’s star presence will help mark a new milestone in the growth of professional golf in Indonesia and across Asia.
“Today heralds an exciting landmark for golf in Indonesia,” said Kyi Hla Han, Executive Chairman, Asian Tour. “We are delighted to launch the Indonesian Masters, which will place Indonesian golf firmly on the world map and play a significant role in the expansion of the game here.
“With Lee Westwood competing in the inaugural edition, it will rubberstamp the Indonesian Masters as a premier event on the Asian Tour and reflect the importance of the game in this vibrant nation.
“The Asian Tour and our partners will make every effort to ensure the great success of the Indonesian Masters so that all of Indonesia can be proud of this new tournament.”
Westwood has enjoyed a phenomenal past two years where he was crowned the inaugural Race to Dubai winner on the European Tour in 2009 and subsequently became the world’s top player by dislodging Tiger Woods from his perch last season.
A winner of 32 international titles, the 37-year-old Englishman will be looking to add to his success in Asia where he has won previously in Japan, Macau and Malaysia.
“I am looking forward to competing in the inaugural Indonesian Masters. I have heard that Royale Jakarta is a magnificent golf course and I am really eager to compete on this venue,” said Westwood.
“Asia has always been good to me over the years as I have won several titles across the region and I hope to challenge for my first win in Indonesia. However, I know it will not be easy as the level of competition on the Asian Tour is really strong. Indonesia is a wonderful country to visit and I can’t wait to return.”
The Royale Jakarta Golf Club, located 15 minutes from Central of Jakarta, will become the permanent home of the Indonesian Masters. Designed by Bob Moore Jr. and JMP Group, the exclusive 27-hole golf club is one of Asia’s newest jewels where it uses the latest type of Sea Isle Supreme Paspalum grass to meet and exceed international standards.
“Of behalf of the Club, we are excited to forge a new partnership with the Indonesian Masters and Asian Tour. We have every confidence that this tournament will create a major impact on the landscape of professional golf in Indonesia and ultimately showcase Royale Jakarta to the world,” said Royale Jakarta Golf Club Chief Operating Officer, George Chandra.
The Indonesian Masters will be broadcast “live” over four rounds to over 40 countries worldwide, reaching 440 million homes.
Han said the launch of the Asian Tour’s latest tournament was the continuation of several major announcements for the official sanctioning body for professional golf in the region. Amongst the recent developments include a 12-year agreement with IMG Media to set-up a joint venture company which will manage all television production and global distribution.
PGPI’s Board Member Nursalam Tabusalla believes the Indonesian Masters will provide a wonderful opportunity for local stalwarts to compete in a world-class event.
“We are delighted to work with the Asian Tour in the staging of the Indonesian Masters. Through this new event, the Indonesian players will relish the opportunity to compete against the stars from Asia. It will be tremendous if one of our players win the Indonesian Masters,” he said.
The Indonesian Masters will enjoy a comprehensive marketing and PR campaign for its partners to benefit from the exposure of a truly international golf tournament. Various activities will be organised during the week of the Indonesian Masters for all in the family to enjoy and savour.
Stars of the Asian Tour include newly crowned Order of Merit champion Noh Seung-yul of Korea, three-time number one Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka, Australia’s Marcus Fraser, Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg, Singapore’s Mardan Mamat, China’s Liang Wen-chong and Siddikur, the first Bangladeshi winner in the region.

Few points which will let you understand the Golf equipment and Golf clubs.
Not a new person but sometimes a professional person also find it difficult to understand why he fails to get the expertise into the game. However, here we will be discussing few points which will let you understand the Golf equipment and Golf clubs.
The First Key is to understand the measurements of the Gold clubs:
A quality fitting can’t be done without you knowing your proper measurements. To calculate your best putter length you must base it on your height. You will do what’s known as a wrist-to-floor measurement for a Golf club. Measure form the inside of your wrist at the top of your hand all the way down to the floor. Keep this measurement ready for future reference.
The Second Key is to know the posture:
Figure out what your posture is when you’re putting. Do you stand more upright like a Vijay Singh? If so you will be better suited to longer putters that have more upright angles. Or do you have more of a crouched posture like the great Jack Nicklaus? If you fall into this category you will need a shorter putter that has flatter angles with it. and hence use can not use the golf equipment as per requirement and hence can not get expertise in golf clubs.
The Third Key:
What’s your putting stroke like? You must consider this because depending on your wrist action, it will dictate what type of grips you need so that you can handle the golf equipment correctly. Players with more of a pendulum action will choose wider or fatter grips to inhibit any unwanted wrist action. A golfer who has more wrist action in their stroke will prefer the smaller, thinner, more traditional sized grips. As these are believed to promote a smoother release of the ball.
The Fourth Key:
Look at your stroke path. If you have inside stroke, you probably have a tendency to pull your putts and will benefit from what’s known as heel shafted model putter. If you’re more of straight-back-straight-through stroke you will have more of a tendency to push your putts in Golf clubs. You would then benefit more from a face balanced putter with the weight dispersed evenly in the putter head.
With that being said, go get yourself a properly fitted putter. Every golfer knows good putting is essential and you’re leaving yourself at a huge disadvantage by not using the proper equipment!

Gujarat Kensville Challenge 2011
SCORESHEET
January 16th 2011, Ahmedabad, India: Gaganjeet Bhullar became the first Indian to win on the Challenge Tour after triumphing by one shot at the season-opening Gujarat Kensville Challenge, held in his homeland.
Such was the demanding nature of the course and conditions at the Jeev Milkha Singh-designed Kensville Golf Club in Ahmedabad, India, only six players finished under par.
After opening with a bogey Bhullar recovered by picking up a shot at the third hole, which he has birdied on all four days.
He immediately gave a shot back at the next hole, and after another bogey at the tenth Bhullar’s grip on the trophy appeared in some peril – especially when Ford ran up successive birdies on the 13th and 14th.
But Bhullar remained composed thereafter and, despite another bogey at the 17th hole, a par at the last sealed his victory.
The 22 year old rising star is now €32,000 richer but, perhaps more importantly, has written his name into the history books.
England’s Jamie Moul finished in third place courtesy of a best-of-the-day round of 69, whilst his compatriot Matthew Baldwin took fourth on two under par.
The only other players to finish below par were Bangladesh’s Siddikur Rahman (73) and Denmark’s Mads Vibe-Hastrup (72), who shared fifth place on one under par.
The Challenge Tour will now take a two month break before the season resumes with the Abierto International Copa Antioquia, in Colombia, from March 10-13.

Golf venues are made more affordable and easily accessible for the average consumer
Many people are of the perception that golf is only for the rich and famous. This is because the sport itself requires substantial investment not just in golf club memberships, but also in golf equipment. However, in recent years, this trend is giving way to an uprising one - the masses are starting to adopt this popular sport. This trend is made possible because of 2 factors. Firstly, golf venues are made more affordable and easily accessible for the average consumer. Secondly, if you know where to shop, you can get your hands on affordable golf equipment.
In part, this has something to do with the Internet. The Internet offers a new way for consumers to shop. Everything in the online world is based on transparency. That means consumers can always compare prices with a few simple clicks. Many businessmen with sharp acumen recognize this element immediately, and sought to sell their merchandise at reasonable prices. In the end, the volume that they are able to move through online sales will more than make up for the price difference.
But lowering prices doesn't mean having to compromise on quality. You still get branded merchandise from online stores. Huge golfing brands like Callaway Golf, Ogio, FootJoy, TaylorMade, etc. are all available online. In fact, product manufacturers would be crazy not to distribute their products through online channels. They would be missing out on the immense opportunities that the Internet has to offer.
For the consumer, this is great news. Consumers can expect to purchase branded items at a reduced price, and there is variety available. For example, a quick visit to a golf equipment online store would reveal dozens of popular brands, and all sorts of golf related products. These include golf clubs, golf clothing, and even golf watches.
Everything is well organized to allow the site visitor to quickly locate the item(s) that he or she is looking for. A website visitor can find specific products by browsing the relevant category, or by browsing brand names. For each product, the price and product description is displayed alongside a matching photo.
The benefit of buying from an online store is that you get to shop from the comfort of your own home. If you know your golf game well, you know exactly what you need. So there is no need to travel all the way out to the local sports store just to shop around for the product you are looking for. By visiting an online golf store, you can quickly determine whether the item you want is in stock or not. If it is, simply place an order with your credit card, and have it shipped right to your door step. The whole process is hassle free and helps you save time.
